Hello! We’re glad you’re here! Let us tell you a bit about ourselves, then please comment below and tell us about YOU!
We are three sisters who share a love of the art of homemaking. We have a lot in common and a lot of different interests, as well.
- One of us is retired from a career as an award-winning executive at a multinational software company
- Two of us are retired homeschool mothers with nine children between us.
- Among the three of us, we have 6 dogs, 46 chickens, 6 ducks, 3 freeze-dryers, and 17 acres
- One of us lives on 1 acre in a suburban area
- Two of us live on 6+ acres rurally
- Together, we have 99 years of homemaking experience
- We live in different planting zones
- Two have relocated and established homes in different states over the years
- One has resided in the same area since establishing a home
- We were married in 1986, 1988, and 1996
We’ve experienced great joy and satisfaction in establishing and maintaining our homes and families. We’ve also experienced frustration, sadness, and setbacks.
We desire to encourage, inspire, entertain, and inform you here at ‘Steady Homemaking. You don’t need a certified homestead property to enjoy a “‘steady” lifestyle. It’s really more of a mindset than a location or number of acres.
Our interests include, but are not limited to:
- Gardening
- Canning
- Freeze Drying
- Houseplants
- Chickens
- Ducks
- Whole foods
- Healthy eating (80/20)
- Crocheting
- Homemaking
Where do you live and what are some fun facts about YOU?
Here’s a little bit about each of us, individually.
Hello, I’m Granny!
Grandpa and I have lived in Indiana all of our marriage. We met at a small liberal arts college and married after he graduated, which was after my sophomore year. I completed a teaching degree following our marriage.
Interestingly, in 2022, I completed 24 years of homeschooling. I didn’t set out to homeschool, but it called to me when it was time to think about sending my oldest off for half the day every day. We dove in, and with the support of most of our family, we never looked back. I have fairly strong views on this, which I’m sure will pop up here and there as you read.
Happily, my own mother excelled in the art of homemaking. She knew how to stretch a dollar and how to entertain simply but with beauty. I owe her a debt of gratitude for her model of all-out mothering and homemaking. She did not desire any other “career,” and I found myself endeavoring to create the same warm atmosphere when I established my own home at 20 years old.
Of course, I have to mention that I have five lovely daughters and nine grandchildren! Raising children requires every bit of one’s physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual strength. Most of that strength is grown WHILE one is raising the children, so that makes it an interesting journey.
I hope to encourage you in this walk, whether you’re just starting out, or if, like me, you’re a ways down the path of your homemaking journey. The journey brings so many rewards.
Greetings from Sage!
I am married to Doc and currently live in Northeast Ohio! Doc and I met in Chicago after our graduate work and married shortly thereafter. Realizing that owning a home and raising a family were our highest priority and that expensive Chicago might make that challenging, we moved to North Carolina in search of a slower-paced life. Our first child was born there and then a job change lead us to Cincinnati, 3 more children, another job change and a new city, Cleveland. It’s been an adventure!!
I am a Speech-Language Pathologist by training but my desire was always to be a full-time, stay-at-home mother, like my mother had been. Doc agreed and has faithfully supported our family as we home-educated and raised our four children. We put in a lot of hard work to provide a well-rounded, mostly classical education for our kids, as well as vocational and real-life experiences. Along the way, two of our daughters were interested in all things equestrian and that led us to purchase the small farm where we currently have horses, dogs, cats, ducks and chickens. As I said, it’s been an adventure!
Having the farm led to the pursuit of vegetable gardening, flower gardening, chicken and duck raising, and efforts at self-sustenance! Most recently, in pursuit of better health, I am interested in keeping a dairy cow and all of the butter and cheese-making opportunities. Another adventure!
I hope you will enjoy following along with my successes and failures (that’s where the learning is, right?) as I share my passions, my learning, my experience and my joy as my adventures continue!
